Congratulations Aramatou Toure - ‘Top Model of Colour' winner - season 9

Aramatou Toure

Yesterday, I was happy to hear about a modelling competition held annually in the UK called Top Model of Colour International (TMC). The competition plays a 'pivotal role in exposing models of colour into mainstream fashion, it provides a route for female and male models to enter a competition that would teach them all about the fashion industry and ultimately give them the knowledge and experience they need to break into mainstream fashion as well as giving them the chance to find out from professionals, their true potential to becoming a professional model.'

On May 30th, TMC announced the beautiful Ivorian model Aramatou Toure as its season 9 winner. Aramatou who is 5ft 8in, is also a personal trainer, is based in London, UK and draws inspiration as a model from Alek Wek.

One of the main reasons why so many young black women in the West have skin colour/identity issues is the lack of representation of black women in mainstream media; women that black girls can relate to. The creator of TMC, Sola Oyebade said: “Based on the modelling industry in the UK and across the world currently, there is no doubt that the industry generally has not yet realised, or is not yet willing to accept the need for employing and using more models of colour in their advertising campaigns. Top Model of Colour will continually play a pivotal role in promoting models of colour and to be a catalyst for change in the industry”.

This lack of representation, especially in the fashion industry, is something that models, such as Naomi Campbell and Jourdan Dunn have voiced over the years. It is therefore encouraging that TMC is doing its bit to address this issue by creating a competition like this, and not only helping to promote black women positively, but promote a diverse range of black women. We can see this in TMC's choice of winner this year: a striking, dark skinned, natural haired, non typically European featured African woman! Well done TMC and congratulations Aramatou! BlackCleopatra wishes you great success with your career as a model.
